Is a 5x7 Rug Big Enough for a Living Room? Sofa Sizes, Room Sizes & Layouts

Quick answer: yes, a 5x7 rug (60 x 84 inches) is big enough for a small living room up to about 10x11 feet, as long as your sofa is 72 inches or shorter (a loveseat or apartment sofa) and you place it with the front legs of the seating on the rug. It is too small for a standard 84-inch sofa, a sectional, or any living room of 11x13 feet or more. There, a 6x9 or 8x10 looks right.

  • Works: loveseat plus one or two chairs, apartment living rooms, reading corners, open-plan seating zones.
  • Too small: 84-inch or longer sofas, sectionals, chairs facing the sofa, rooms 11x13 feet and up.
  • Test: the rug should be at least 6 inches longer than your sofa on each side.

Whether a 5x7 looks "right" in a living room has less to do with the room than with the furniture sitting on it. The same rug can look generous in front of a loveseat and like a bath mat in front of a long sofa. Below are the actual numbers designers use, so you can check your own room in five minutes. If you only need the dimensions in inches and centimeters, our 5x7 rug size guide covers them in detail.

The Sofa Rule: What Size Sofa Fits a 5x7 Rug?

Run the rug's 7-foot (84-inch) side parallel to the sofa. A rug looks anchored when it extends at least 6 inches past each arm, and ideally 8 to 12. Subtract that from 84 inches and you get the longest sofa a 5x7 can carry:

Sofa or seating Typical length Rug past each arm Verdict
Loveseat 58 to 64 in 10 to 13 in Ideal
Apartment sofa 68 to 72 in 6 to 8 in Works
Standard sofa 80 to 84 in 0 to 2 in Too small: size up to 6x9
Long sofa 90 in and up Sofa overhangs the rug Too small: size up to 8x10
Sectional about 9 x 7 ft Overhangs on two sides Too small: 8x10 or 9x12

The 5-foot (60-inch) depth is the other limit. With the sofa's front legs 6 inches on, an 18-inch walkway and a 20-inch-deep coffee table, you have used about 44 inches. What remains is not enough for chairs facing the sofa with their legs on the rug, so on a 5x7 the chairs go at the ends of the rug, angled in, not across from the sofa.

What Size Living Room Suits a 5x7 Rug?

The usual guide is 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls (8 to 12 inches in a very small room). In a living room, though, the rug is sized to the seating group rather than to the whole room, so treat these as starting points:

Living room size How a 5x7 reads Better size if not a 5x7
8x10 ft or smaller Fills the seating area; comfortable border of floor 5x7 is the right size
9x11 to 10x11 ft Works with a loveseat or apartment sofa 5x8 if your sofa is 72 to 80 in
11x13 ft Starts to look like an island unless layered 6x9
12x15 ft and larger Too small; floats in the room 8x10 or 9x12

The exception is an open-plan space. A 5x7 is not trying to fill an open living area, only to mark out one zone, such as a reading corner with two chairs and a side table. There, the floor around the rug is what separates the zones, and a 5x7 can work in a much larger footprint.

3 Layouts That Make a 5x7 Work in a Living Room

1. Front legs on (the best look)

Slide the rug under the sofa until the front legs sit 4 to 6 inches onto it, then angle one chair at each end with its front legs on as well. The coffee table sits fully on the rug. This connects the furniture into one group and makes the rug look intentional rather than undersized. It works with sofas up to 72 inches.

2. Floating under the coffee table

All legs off: the rug frames the coffee table, and the seating sits 4 to 6 inches from its edges.

Center the rug under the coffee table and keep every seat just off it, about 4 to 6 inches from the edge. This is the most forgiving layout for a small room and for renters, because nothing has to be lifted to place the rug. Keep the gap even on all sides; if the sofa sits a foot or more away from the rug, the room looks disconnected.

3. Layered over a larger rug

Layering: a neutral jute base anchors the whole seating group, and the patterned 5x7 becomes the centerpiece.

If you love a particular 5x7, such as a vintage or hand-knotted piece, but your room is 12x15 feet or bigger, put a neutral 8x10 or 9x12 flatweave or jute rug down first and lay the 5x7 on top, centered under the coffee table. The base rug does the anchoring and the 5x7 adds the color and pattern. Our guide to layering rugs covers sizes and textures that pair well.

5 Signs Your 5x7 Rug Is Too Small for the Living Room

A 5x7 rug floating alone in a large open living room, too small for the seating area
The classic mistake: a small rug floating in the middle of the room with the seating pushed back against the walls.
  1. The sofa is as long as the rug, or longer. Anything over 72 inches leaves less than 6 inches past each arm.
  2. No furniture touches it. If the sofa and chairs sit a foot or more away, the rug floats.
  3. There are 3 feet or more of bare floor between the rug and the walls on the long sides.
  4. The coffee table hangs over an edge or sits closer to one end than the other.
  5. You want chairs facing the sofa. A 60-inch-deep rug cannot hold both sides of a conversation group.

If two or more apply, size up. A rug that is slightly too big looks deliberate; one that is slightly too small looks like a mistake.

5x7 vs 5x8 vs 6x9 vs 8x10 in a Living Room

Size Inches Sq ft Longest sofa it suits Living room size
5x7 60 x 84 35 72 in up to about 10x11 ft
5x8 60 x 96 40 80 to 84 in about 9x12 to 10x12 ft
6x9 72 x 108 54 84 in about 10x12 to 11x13 ft
8x10 96 x 120 80 96 in or a sectional 11x13 ft and up

The 5x8 is the size people forget. It is the same width as a 5x7 but a foot longer, which is exactly what an 80 to 84-inch sofa needs. Compare the two in our 5x8 vs 5x7 guide, or see how a 5x7 stacks up against the next full size in our 5x7 vs 6x9 comparison.

How to Make a 5x7 Look Bigger

  • Choose a lighter color. Cream, ivory and soft grey read as more floor space than navy or charcoal.
  • Pick an all-over pattern instead of a single center medallion; medallions look cropped at 5x7.
  • Pull the furniture in. Bringing the sofa and chairs closer to the rug tightens the group and makes the rug read as the right size.
  • Use a rug pad about 4'10" x 6'10" so the edges lie flat and do not curl. Our rug pad guide explains which pad suits which floor.

Tape It Out Before You Buy

The tape test: outline 60 x 84 inches where the rug will go and live with it for a day.
  1. Mark a 60 x 84-inch rectangle with painter's tape, the long side parallel to the sofa.
  2. Check that the sofa's front legs land 4 to 6 inches inside the tape and that the rug runs at least 6 inches past each arm.
  3. Make sure the coffee table sits fully inside, with about 18 inches between it and the sofa.
  4. Leave it down for a day. If it looks "just about right," it will look slightly small once the rug is down, so consider a 5x8 or 6x9.

Is a 5x7 Big Enough for Other Rooms?

Often, yes. A 5x7 placed sideways under the lower two-thirds of a queen bed leaves about 12 inches of rug on each side; under a king it is too narrow. It suits most home offices, entryways and kids' rooms. It is too narrow for nearly every dining table, because chairs need about 24 inches of rug past each table edge. The 5x7 rug size guide covers each room.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a 5x7 rug too small for a living room?
Not for a small living room up to about 10x11 feet with a loveseat or a sofa up to 72 inches. It is too small for an 84-inch sofa, a sectional, or a room of 11x13 feet or more.
Where should a 5x7 rug go in a living room?
Centered on the seating group, with the 7-foot side parallel to the sofa. Either slide it under the front legs of the sofa and chairs, or center it under the coffee table with all legs off.
Can a 5x7 rug go under a sofa?
Only the front legs. Slide it 4 to 6 inches under the front edge of a sofa that is 72 inches or shorter. All legs on needs an 8x10.
What size rug should go in a living room?
A rug that runs at least 6 inches past each end of the sofa and holds the front legs of every seat. For most living rooms that is a 6x9 or 8x10; small apartment living rooms can use a 5x7 or 5x8.
Is a 5x8 rug too small for a living room?
A 5x8 suits sofas up to about 84 inches in rooms around 9x12 to 10x12 feet. Larger rooms, chairs facing the sofa and sectionals need a 6x9 or 8x10.
How big is a 5x7 rug?
60 x 84 inches, 35 square feet, or about 152 x 213 cm.
