Most area rugs are rectangular, so a round rug immediately draws the eye. Distinctive and a bit different, a circular area rug softens the straight lines of a room, adding contrast and interest. Read More
Round Rugs Provide Curving Contrast
Have you thought about placing a round rug in your room? And no, you don’t have to live in a lighthouse for a round area rug to work! Many of the items of furniture in our homes are rectangular or square in shape, so it’s lovely to add contrast with some curves. A circular rug can soften a room, providing relief from the straight lines of hearths, tables and couches, and the shape of the room itself. We think they’re wonderful; and here are a few ways that round rugs can add a new element to your décor.
Layering Rectangular & Round Rugs
In your living room, you can create an opulent look by layering rugs. A large rectangular rug with a smaller round rug placed on top of it gives a really luxurious effect, for both the eyes and the toes. Like their straight-sided friends, a round area rug can be used to delineate spaces, and is especially good at creating cozy, intimate areas in a larger room. The curved shape also naturally creates a sense of movement: place one in the centre of a larger room to direct the traffic!
If you’re lucky enough to have a sociable round table, a round rug is the obvious solution. A rug that’s 8’ in diameter will work for a 48” or a 60” round dining table. If you want to create real impact with your dining room rug (or if you’re King Arthur with a large round table!) we have a great selection of 10’ round rugs.
The Beautiful Colors In Our Round Rugs
The curving shape of a round rug lends itself well to a deep border. Look out for dark colored borders with contrasting paler centers, perfect for a centrally-placed round table. The warm, golden tones of the inner circle seem to reflect light and almost shimmer: this is thanks to the natural vegetable dyes we always use, which give the yarn a luster that you simply don’t get with synthetic dyes.
Vibrant Round Rug Designs
These are especially spectacular if you want to brighten up a darker space. If your room is already light, reverse the design, and go for a round rug with a vibrant central shade such as a deep red or rich brown, or even add some drama with a black background color.
Round Rug Dyeing Techniques
It surprises many people to know that a synthetic dye is less predictable than a natural dye, and not as stable. As well as producing a more vivid hue, a vegetable dye gives a lasting color; and this, along with the quality of the wool and the high knot count, is why our handmade area rugs will last a lifetime (and possibly even longer!).
The craft of the dyer is passed down from parent to child, and it’s a real skill. The talented artisan dyers we work with painstakingly prepare each shade of yarn: each plant has different properties so needs its own special treatment. Have a look at the beautiful colors in our circular area rugs, and you’ll see why this extra effort is so worth it.
