5x8 vs 6x9: Which Size Is Right for Your Room?

A 5x8 and a 6x9 look similar in a product photo. In a room, the 12 extra square feet of a 6x9 can be the difference between a rug that looks right and one that looks undersized. Here's how to choose.

The Actual Difference in Size

A 5x8 rug is 40 square feet. A 6x9 is 54 square feet β€” 35% larger. The 6x9 adds one full foot in each dimension. That foot matters more than it sounds, because rug sizing errors are typically errors of being too small β€” a 5x8 that should be a 6x9 looks like a bath mat floating under a sofa.

The price difference between a 5x8 and 6x9 in the same style is typically $80–200 depending on material and construction. For most rooms, if you're genuinely between sizes, the 6x9 is worth the cost difference.

Room Size Guide

  • Up to 10x10 feet: A 5x8 works. The rug fills the center zone without crowding the walls.
  • 10x12 to 10x14 feet: This is the decision zone. A 5x8 can work if the seating group is compact (love seat + one chair). A 6x9 works better if you have a standard 86-inch sofa and two accent chairs.
  • 11x14 to 12x15 feet: 6x9 is the right choice here. A 5x8 will look undersized and tentative in a room this large.
  • Larger than 12x15 feet: Consider an 8x10 or 9x12 instead. A 6x9 will start to look small.

Furniture Fit Comparison

Standard 3-Seat Sofa (86–90 inches)

The 5x8's 8-foot length is very close to a standard sofa's 86-inch (7.2 foot) width. This leaves only about 4–5 inches of rug extending beyond the sofa on each side β€” it looks tight and slightly mismatched. The 6x9's 9-foot length gives you about 12 inches on each side of the same sofa, which reads as properly proportioned.

Verdict: For a standard sofa, the 6x9 almost always looks better.

Love Seat (60–72 inches)

A love seat is narrower, and a 5x8 has room to breathe on either side β€” about 14 inches per side for a 60-inch love seat. A 6x9 gives even more room, which can start to look large for the furniture piece. For a love seat with one chair, the 5x8 is often the better fit.

Dining Table

For a dining table, the rule is that all chair legs should stay on the rug even when pulled out for seating. A standard 4-person dining table is about 36x60 inches. When a chair is pulled out, it extends about 20 inches from the table edge. This means you need a rug that's at least 36+(20x2) = 76 inches on the short side and 60+(20x2) = 100 inches on the long side β€” roughly 6.5x8.5 feet. Neither a 5x8 nor a 6x9 works well for most dining tables. See the dedicated article for dining rug sizing.

When the 5x8 Is the Right Choice

  • Bedroom beside the bed (one side placement, not foot-of-bed)
  • Small study or reading nook with a single chair
  • Small living room with a love seat rather than a full sofa
  • Entryway or foyer (though a runner is often better here)
  • As a layered rug on top of a larger jute or flat-weave base rug

When the 6x9 Is the Right Choice

  • Living room with a standard or large sofa
  • Bedroom foot-of-bed placement for queen or king bed
  • Home office with a large desk and chair
  • Any room where you've been looking at a 5x8 and thinking "it looks a bit small"

The "Too Small" Test

Before purchasing, tape out the rug dimensions on your floor with painter's tape. Stand in the doorway and look at the space. If the taped rectangle looks like it's floating without connection to the furniture, size up. If it looks proportionate and contained, you've found your size.

The tape test takes 10 minutes and prevents the most common rug-buying mistake: ordering online based on dimensions alone, receiving the rug, and immediately knowing it should be bigger.
