Stair Runner Width Guide: How Wide Should a Stair Runner Be?

Width Is the Measurement Most People Get Wrong

Everyone focuses on length when buying a stair runner, but width is the decision that determines how the finished staircase looks. Too narrow and the runner looks like an afterthought. Too wide and you lose the visual contrast that makes a runner worth having.

The Standard Rule

Leave 2–4 inches of exposed stair wood on each side of the runner. This means:

  • For a 36-inch-wide staircase: a 27–30 inch wide runner (leaving 3 inches on each side)
  • For a 42-inch-wide staircase: a 32–36 inch wide runner
  • For a 48-inch-wide staircase: a 36–42 inch wide runner

The exposed wood on each side creates a visual frame that makes both the wood and the runner look intentional. If you have beautiful hardwood stairs, showing more — 4–5 inches on each side — lets the wood shine. If the stair wood is less attractive, narrower exposed borders are better.

Common Runner Widths Available

Standard stair runners come in 26", 27", 30", 32", and 36" widths. If your calculation falls between standard widths, always round down (show more wood) rather than up — a runner that nearly reaches wall-to-wall looks like badly fitted carpet rather than a deliberate runner.

What If Your Stairs Are Curved?

Curved or winding staircases require professional measurement and often custom cutting. The runner must be cut on a bias at turns to lie flat without bunching. This is a case where professional installation is worth the cost.

Seaming Two Narrower Rugs

If your staircase is unusually wide, two runners can be seamed side by side. This requires professional binding to prevent raveling at the seam edges. It's a more complex installation but the result looks seamless when done correctly.
