A rug that barely peeks out from under the bed frame makes the room feel cramped and unfinished. Here's a practical framework for getting it right regardless of your bed size.

The Three Placement Options

Before picking a size, decide how you want the rug to relate to the bed. There are three standard approaches, and the right one depends on your room size and budget.

Full coverage: The rug extends at least 18–24 inches beyond the bed on all exposed sides. The nightstands and sometimes even the dresser sit on the rug. This approach works best in large primary bedrooms and creates the most luxurious feel. You'll typically need a 9x12 or 10x14 for a king, and an 8x10 for a queen.

Partial under-bed: The rug slides under the lower two-thirds of the bed, leaving 18–24 inches of rug exposed at the foot and on both sides. This is the most versatile approach and works in medium-sized rooms. A 8x10 works well under a king, a 6x9 under a queen.

Foot-of-bed runner: A 2x8 or 2.5x10 runner placed horizontally at the foot of the bed. Practical for smaller rooms where a full rug would overwhelm the space, and easier to clean. Works best in rooms with hardwood or tile floors where you want warmth underfoot without committing to a large rug.

Rug Sizing by Bed Size

Here are the most reliable size pairings for each bed configuration:

• Twin bed: 5x8 for partial coverage; 6x9 for full coverage
• Full/Double bed: 6x9 for partial coverage; 8x10 for full coverage
• Queen bed: 8x10 for partial coverage; 9x12 for full coverage
• King bed: 9x12 for partial coverage; 10x14 for full coverage
• California King: 9x12 minimum; 10x14 preferred

Account for Nightstand Placement

If your nightstands sit beside the bed (not under it), factor them into your sizing decision. Ideally, nightstands sit on the rug so they don't visually float on bare floor. This typically adds 12–18 inches to the width you need. When in doubt, tape out the rug dimensions on your floor before ordering — it takes five minutes and eliminates the most common sizing regret.

Pile Height for Bedrooms

Bedrooms are low-traffic areas, so you can prioritize comfort over durability. High-pile and plush rugs (1.5”+ pile height) that would mat down quickly in a hallway can thrive in a bedroom where foot traffic is minimal.
