Quick answer: a dining room rug should be at least 24 inches larger than your table on every side, so add 48 inches to the table's length and width. For most homes that means an 8x10 for a four- or six-seat table up to 72 x 48 inches, a 9x12 for six- to eight-seat tables 72 to 96 inches long, and a 10x14 for eight to ten seats. A 48-inch round table takes an 8-foot round rug. The rug should still leave 12 to 24 inches of bare floor at the walls.
- Formula: table length + 48 in by table width + 48 in.
- Test: pull every chair out to its seated position; all four legs stay on the rug.
- Room limit: the rug should be at least 24 inches smaller than the room in each direction.
Dining Room Rug Size Chart by Table Size and Seats
Measure the tabletop, not the base, and find the row that matches. Every size below keeps 24 inches of rug beyond the table edge.
| Table shape and size | Seats | Minimum rug | Rug to buy |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rectangular, up to 60 x 36 in | 4 | 108 x 84 in | 8x10 |
| Rectangular, 60 to 72 x 36 to 42 in | 6 | 120 x 90 in | 8x10 (72 in is the limit) |
| Rectangular, 72 to 96 x 40 to 44 in | 6 to 8 | 144 x 92 in | 9x12 |
| Rectangular, 96 to 120 x 44 to 48 in | 8 to 10 | 168 x 96 in | 10x14 |
| Rectangular, over 120 in | 10 to 12 | 12 ft or longer | 12x15 or custom |
| Oval, 72 to 84 x 42 in | 6 | 132 x 90 in | 9x12 (or a 9x12 oval) |
| Round, 36 to 42 in | 2 to 4 | 90 in diameter | 8-ft round or 8x8 square |
| Round, 48 in | 4 | 96 in diameter | 8-ft round |
| Round, 54 to 60 in | 6 | 108 in diameter | 9-ft or 10-ft round, or a 9x12 |
| Round, 72 in | 8 | 120 in diameter | 10-ft round or a 10x14 |
| Square, 36 to 48 in | 4 | 96 x 96 in | 8-ft square or 8x10 |
| Square, 60 in | 8 | 108 x 108 in | 9x12 or 10-ft round |
Notice that a 6x9 is missing. At 72 inches wide it only holds a 24-inch-wide table with full clearance, so it works for a two-seat cafe table and little else. If you are shopping a small dining nook, an 8x10 or an 8-foot round is the smallest size that keeps chairs on the rug.
How to Measure for a Dining Room Rug (Table + 48 Inches)
- Measure the tabletop length and width in inches. For an extendable table, measure it with the leaf in if you use it more than a few times a year.
- Add 48 inches to each dimension. A 72 x 42-inch table needs at least 120 x 90 inches of rug, which rounds up to an 8x10 (96 x 120).
- Check the room. Subtract 24 inches from the room's length and width; that is the largest rug the room will take while still showing 12 inches of floor at each wall. A 12x14-foot room maxes out at 10x12, so a 9x12 is the practical ceiling.
- Tape it out. Mark the rug outline on the floor with painter's tape, pull every chair out as if someone were sitting, and confirm all legs stay inside the tape.
Rug size for a 4-seat table
Most four-seat rectangular tables are 48 to 60 inches long and 30 to 36 inches wide, which puts the minimum rug at 96 to 108 by 78 to 84 inches. An 8x10 is the standard answer. A 5x8 or 6x9 will leave the back legs on the floor every time someone stands up.
Rug size for a 6-seat table
Six-seat tables run 60 to 84 inches long. Up to 72 inches, an 8x10 works with the table centered and the 10-foot side along the table's length. From 72 to 84 inches, step up to a 9x12; see our 8x10 size guide for where the cutoff falls.
Rug size for an 8- to 10-seat table
Tables from 84 to 96 inches (eight seats) take a 9x12; 96 to 120 inches (eight to ten seats) take a 10x14. Our 9x12 dining table guide covers the eight-chair layout in detail.
Rug size for oval tables
Treat an oval like the rectangle it would fit inside: measure its full length and width, add 48 inches, and buy a rectangular rug in that size. A rectangular rug under an oval table looks intentional; an undersized oval rug does not.
Round table rug size formula (diameter + 48 inches)
Add 48 inches to the table's diameter and buy a round rug that size or larger: a 48-inch table needs a 96-inch (8-foot) round, a 60-inch table a 9- to 10-foot round, a 72-inch table a 10-foot round. A square rug of the same width works just as well, and a 9x12 rectangle is a good option under a 60-inch round in a rectangular room. Our guide to round and oval dining rugs compares the looks.
Maximum rug size for your room (room minus 24 inches)
If the table formula gives you a rug bigger than the room can take, the room wins. Keep at least 12 inches of floor at each wall (18 to 24 looks better in a formal room) and let the table clearance drop to 18 inches on the short ends if you must. Wall-to-wall rug reads as carpet and makes the room feel smaller.
Common Dining Room Rug Size Mistakes
- Buying too small. The most common error by far. If you are torn between two sizes, take the larger one.
- Measuring the room instead of the table. The table sets the minimum; the room only sets the maximum.
- Forgetting the leaf. A 72-inch table with an 18-inch leaf becomes a 90-inch table that needs a 9x12.
- Off-center placement. Center the rug under the table, not in the room, unless the table itself is centered.
- Running the rug the wrong way. The long side of the rug follows the long side of the table.
- Thick pile under chairs. Chairs snag and the rug wears in tracks; see the next section.
Best Pile Height and Material So Chairs Slide Easily
Keep the pile at 1/4 inch or lower. Flatweave and low-pile wool rugs let chairs slide without catching, hide crumbs less, and vacuum in one pass; wool also resists stains naturally. Machine-washable rugs are the practical pick for families with young kids. Skip shag, high-pile and deep hand-tufted rugs under a table. Put a thin felt-and-rubber pad underneath so the rug stays put when chairs drag; our rug pad guide explains which thickness clears the chair legs. For material picks, see best rugs under a dining table.
Color and Pattern Tips for Dining Room Rugs
A dining rug will meet red wine and tomato sauce eventually. Mid-tone colors and all-over patterns (Persian medallions, geometrics, heathered flatweaves) hide spills and wear far better than solid cream or charcoal. Pick up one color from the chairs, curtains or artwork so the rug ties the room together, and keep the border in mind: on a patterned rug, the table should sit inside the center field, not across the border.
