Outdoor Rugs Move. Here's How to Stop That.
Even a heavy outdoor rug will shift, curl at the corners, and occasionally take flight in a strong wind. The solutions depend on your surface type and how much movement you're dealing with.
On Concrete, Stone, or Tile
A non-slip rug pad designed for outdoor use is the best starting point. Look for open-weave rubber or PVC pads that let water drain through — solid felt pads trap moisture and cause mold. Double-sided outdoor carpet tape applied at the corners and edges also works well on smooth surfaces, though it can leave residue.
On Wood Decking
Non-slip pads work on wood but choose one with a gentler grip to avoid scratching the finish. Rubber-backed rugs can discolor certain deck stains and sealers over time — test a small area if you're unsure. On slatted decks, choose a rug pad with an open enough weave that it doesn't hold water against the wood.
Stopping Corner Curl
Corners curl because the rug dries unevenly after rain or humidity changes. Rug corner tape or small weights designed for outdoor use (some look like decorative river stones) placed under the corners solve this. Alternatively, a full rug pad weighted by furniture provides enough downward pressure to keep corners flat.
In Windy Areas
If your patio or porch gets consistent wind, furniture placement is your best tool — keep chairs and tables on the rug so their weight holds it down. For exposed areas where furniture doesn't cover the rug, outdoor rug stakes (small plastic anchors that pin through the rug into the ground or crack in pavers) are available for this specific purpose.
Rolling vs. Folding for Storage
When you bring an outdoor rug in for winter or extended rain, always roll it — never fold. Folding creates permanent creases that won't flatten out. Roll with the pile side facing in to protect the surface, and store flat or standing vertically on the rolled end.
