Rugs you've been eyeing — pick up where you left off.

An 8x10 rug measures 8 ft x 10 ft, or 96 by 120 inches, and it is the size most American living rooms are built for. At 80 square feet it is large enough to sit under a full seating group, so the sofa and chair legs land on the rug instead of the floor. Our 8x10 area rugs run from hand-knotted wool through machine washable low-pile weaves, in modern, oriental and traditional patterns. Filter by material, style and color below, or read the room-fit guide further down if you are not sure 8x10 is your size. Free shipping applies as stated at checkout.

Shop 8x10 Area Rugs by Material

At this size the fiber decides both the price and how the rug lives in the room. These four groups cover the catalog.

Wool 8x10 Rugs

Wool rugs 8x10 are the workhorse. Wool springs back after compression, so furniture dents lift out, and its natural lanolin makes it stain resistant without a chemical finish. New Zealand wool is prized for its long, white staple, which takes dye cleanly and gives brighter ivory and blue grounds. Wool is fade resistant next to a window and outlasts a synthetic several times over at a medium pile height.

Hand-Knotted 8x10 Rugs

Hand-knotted means each knot is tied to the warp by hand on a loom, which is why knot density is quoted on these pieces and why they cost what they do. There is no glue and no backing, so a hand-knotted 8x10 is repairable and holds resale value. Compare it against hand-tufted, where yarn is punched into a canvas and held with latex, and machine-woven, where the whole rug is produced on a powered loom.

Washable 8x10 Rugs

An 8x10 washable rug is built low pile on a thin, sometimes reversible backing so it can go through a home machine. This is the kid friendly and pet friendly option for a family room. Check the machine capacity before ordering — an 8x10 needs a large-capacity washer, and some designs split into a cover plus a separate pad.

Jute & Natural Fiber 8x10 Rugs

Jute flatweaves give a textured neutral base below wool pricing and layer well under a smaller patterned rug. Polypropylene and polyester 8x10 rugs are the machine-woven synthetics: cheapest, easiest to clean, shortest lifespan. Viscose adds sheen but crushes underfoot, so treat it as an accent fiber.

8x10 Rugs by Style

Modern 8x10 Rugs

Modern area rugs 8x10 lean on solid grounds, tonal texture and restrained color — grey, charcoal, ivory and beige — so the rug reads as a surface rather than a pattern. Contemporary designs push further into color blocking and irregular motifs.

Oriental & Persian 8x10 Rugs

Oriental rugs 8x10 and Persian designs bring a medallion or all-over pattern with a defined border. These are the pieces that hide traffic best because the pattern breaks up soil. See the full oriental rugs collection for the origin-level detail.

Traditional 8x10 Rugs

Traditional 8x10 rugs cover floral and classic European layouts, plus vintage and distressed finishes where the pile is sheared low and the color is deliberately faded. Common grounds are red, brown, green and multicolor.

Abstract & Geometric 8x10 Rugs

Abstract washes and geometric repeats, including bohemian and flatweave kilim patterns, work in open-plan spaces where the rug has to define a zone without a wall to help it. Kilim buyers should also see our kilim styles for flatweave-specific options.

Is an 8x10 Rug Right for Your Room?

An 8x10 rug is too big for a living room smaller than about 11 by 13 feet. That comes from the standard rule: leave at least 18 inches of exposed floor between the rug edge and the wall on every side, which means adding 3 feet to each rug dimension. At 10 by 12 feet an 8x10 still works but leaves only a foot of border.

  • Living room: the goal is furniture legs on the rug. All four sofa legs fit on an 8x10 if the sofa is under about 8 feet wide; otherwise put the front legs on and let the back legs sit on the floor.
  • Family room and open-plan space: use the 8x10 to mark the seating zone, with the coffee table fully on the rug and at least the front legs of every seat.
  • Dining room: allow 24 inches behind each chair so it can be pushed back without dropping off the edge. An 8x10 handles a dining table up to roughly 48 by 72 inches, which seats six.
  • Bedroom: an 8x10 centered under a queen bed leaves about 18 inches on each side and enough at the foot to stand on. For a king bed, an 8x10 leaves only about 10 inches beside the mattress — go up to a 9x12, or run the 8x10 crosswise starting below the nightstands.

An 8x10 carpet in the wall-to-wall sense is a different product; everything here is a loose-laid area rug.

How Much Does an 8x10 Rug Cost?

Construction sets the price, not the pattern. An 8x10 is 80 square feet, so small differences per square foot become large differences on the ticket. These are typical US market ranges, not RugKnots pricing.

ConstructionTypical 8x10 price rangeWhat you are paying for
Machine-woven synthetic$150 – $600Speed of production; polypropylene or polyester, 3–7 year life
Machine-washable low pile$200 – $700Thin construction, printed or woven face, home laundering
Flatweave wool or jute$400 – $1,500Hand or power loom, no pile, reversible in some weaves
Hand-tufted wool$500 – $2,000Hand-punched yarn on a latex-backed canvas
Hand-knotted wool$1,500 – $8,000+Months of hand labor, knot density, no glue, repairable

Under $500 you are almost always buying machine-made. Above roughly $20 per square foot you are into genuine hand work, and above that the price is driven by knot density, wool quality and whether silk is present. In-stock pieces are marked ready to ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big is an 8x10 rug in cm?

An 8x10 rug is 244 by 305 centimeters. In other units that is 8 feet by 10 feet, 96 by 120 inches, or 2.44 by 3.05 meters, covering 80 square feet. Rug dimensions are listed width first, so the 244 cm measurement is the short side and 305 cm is the long side.

Is an 8x10 rug too big for a living room?

An 8x10 rug is too big for a living room under about 11 by 13 feet, because you want at least 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the wall on all sides. In rooms that size or larger it is usually the right choice, since it lets the sofa and chair legs sit on the rug rather than around it.

How much should a nice 8x10 rug cost?

A good hand-tufted wool 8x10 typically runs $500 to $2,000, and a hand-knotted wool 8x10 generally starts around $1,500 and climbs from there. Machine-woven synthetics sit between $150 and $600. Construction drives the price far more than pattern does, along with knot density and wool quality.

Do 8x10 rugs need a rug pad?

Yes, use a rug pad under an 8x10. At this size the rug will not slide much, but a pad does three other jobs: it stops the pile crushing under furniture, adds a non-slip layer at the edges where people step, and lifts the rug slightly so a vacuum can pull dirt out. Cut the pad about an inch smaller on each side.

Are 8x10 wool rugs machine washable?

No. Wool 8x10 rugs are not machine washable — hot water and agitation shrink and felt the fibers, and an 80-square-foot wool rug is far too heavy wet. Vacuum regularly, blot spills immediately with cold water, and use professional cleaning once a year or so. For laundering, buy a rug specifically sold as an 8x10 washable rug.
