Rugs you've been eyeing — pick up where you left off.
Polypropylene rugs are made from a synthetic fiber that resists stains, holds its color and dries quickly, which is why it is one of the most common materials for area rugs used every day. This collection holds more than 1,600 polypropylene rugs, made from 100% polypropylene or polypropylene blends, in traditional, contemporary, modern, transitional and bohemian designs. More than 500 are rated for indoor/outdoor use, and you will find room-size area rugs, runners, rounds and squares, with prices starting from about $69.
What Is a Polypropylene Rug?
Polypropylene is a synthetic fiber from the olefin family. In rugs it is spun into yarn that is solution-dyed, meaning the color is added while the fiber is made rather than applied to the surface afterward. That is the main reason polypropylene rugs are colorfast and hard to stain: there is no open dye site in the fiber for a spill to grab onto.
Almost every rug in this collection is machine made, which keeps patterns precise and prices accessible. A small group is hand hooked. Many rugs are listed as polypropylene blends, often combined with nylon to change how the pile looks and feels. Each product page lists the exact material.
Polypropylene Rugs: Pros and Cons
Pros: resists most water-based stains, does not absorb much moisture, holds color in sunlight better than many fibers, is easy to clean, and costs less than wool.
Cons: the pile can crush and flatten in very heavy traffic over time, it is not as soft or springy as wool, and oil-based spills can be harder to remove. Like other synthetics, it should be kept away from heat sources such as fireplaces.
Are Polypropylene Rugs Safe?
Polypropylene is one of the most widely used fibers for indoor rugs and carpet, and it is also used for outdoor rugs, upholstery and many household goods. It is a stable plastic fiber, and polypropylene rugs are sold for use throughout the home, including bedrooms, living rooms and kitchens.
Some new rugs have a noticeable smell when first unrolled. This comes from manufacturing and packaging and usually fades. Unroll a new rug in a well-ventilated room, open windows if you can, and give it a few days. If you have specific health concerns or sensitivities, check the material details on the product page and talk to a professional you trust. We do not make health claims about any rug material.

Polypropylene Outdoor Rugs
More than 500 rugs in this collection are rated for indoor/outdoor use. Because polypropylene sheds water and dries quickly, it is the fiber most outdoor rugs are made from. Use these rugs on a covered patio, porch, deck or balcony, then bring them in or let them dry fully after heavy rain. Only rugs marked Indoor/Outdoor on the product page are meant for outside, so check the listing. See all outdoor rugs for more patio options.
Traditional and Medallion Designs
Traditional is the largest style group, with more than 650 rugs, and medallion is the most common pattern. These rugs give you the look of a classic Persian or Oriental design in an easier-care fiber. Browse traditional rugs to compare other materials.
Contemporary, Modern and Bohemian Designs
More than 500 polypropylene rugs are contemporary and more than 350 are modern, with geometric, abstract and striped patterns. Bohemian and distressed rugs use faded, worn-look patterns that also hide everyday dirt well. See our contemporary rugs for softer current designs.
Washable Polypropylene Rugs
More than 230 rugs in this collection are tagged washable. Check the care label on each product page for the exact method. For every washable style, see our washable rugs.
Shop by Color
Blue is the most common color, followed by ivory, black, grey, red and beige. Green, brown, navy, gold and multicolor rugs are also available. Because polypropylene is solution-dyed, bright colors and dark tones hold up well over time.
Polypropylene Rugs by Room
The store suggests most rugs in this collection for the bedroom, living room and dining room, where low-maintenance rugs make sense under sofas and tables. Kitchens, entryways and laundry rooms are a natural fit too, since spills and wet shoes are part of daily life there. Polypropylene runner rugs (more than 340) work in hallways and on stair landings. Shop kitchen rugs and runner rugs for those spaces.

Polypropylene vs. Polyester Rugs
Both are synthetic and budget-friendly, but they behave differently. Polypropylene absorbs very little moisture and is the usual choice for outdoor rugs, damp areas and stain-heavy rooms. Polyester is generally softer and has a richer sheen, but it is not as moisture resistant and can be more prone to matting in heavy traffic. If you are weighing the two, compare with our polyester rugs.
How to Clean a Polypropylene Rug
Vacuum once or twice a week to lift grit before it wears the pile.
Blot spills right away with a clean white cloth. Do not rub.
For most stains, use a little mild dish soap in lukewarm water, blot, then rinse with plain water and blot dry.
For an indoor/outdoor rug, you can hose it down outside, then let it dry flat and completely before putting it back.
Avoid very hot water and high heat, which can damage synthetic fibers.
A rug pad keeps an indoor rug flat on hard floors and reduces wear.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are polypropylene rugs toxic?
Polypropylene is a stable synthetic olefin fiber that is widely used in indoor rugs, carpet and household textiles. A new rug may have a manufacturing odor at first. Unroll it in a ventilated room and the smell usually fades within days. If you have specific health concerns, read the product's material details and ask a professional you trust.
Are polypropylene rugs good?
For everyday rooms, yes. Polypropylene resists stains, holds its color, dries quickly and costs less than wool, which makes it a practical choice for living rooms, kitchens, entryways and patios. The trade-off is feel and recovery: it is not as soft or springy as wool and can flatten in very heavy traffic over time.
Are polypropylene rugs soft?
They feel smooth but firmer than wool or polyester. Softness depends on the pile and construction, so a denser pile or a blended pile can feel softer than a low, tight pile. If softness underfoot matters most, check the material and construction on each product page and consider a polypropylene blend.
Can polypropylene rugs be used outdoors?
Rugs rated Indoor/Outdoor can. More than 500 rugs in this collection carry that rating. Polypropylene resists moisture and fading, so it suits covered patios, porches and decks. Let the rug dry fully after rain and lift it occasionally so the surface underneath can dry too.
Are polypropylene rugs good for pets?
They are a common choice for homes with pets because they resist stains and clean up with mild soap and water. Low, tight piles also hold up better to claws than long, loose piles. No rug is completely pet-proof, so clean accidents quickly. See our pet-friendly rugs collection for more options.
What is the difference between 100% polypropylene and a polypropylene blend?
A 100% polypropylene rug uses only that fiber. A blend mixes polypropylene with another fiber, such as nylon, to change texture, sheen or softness. Both share polypropylene's easy care. Each product page lists the material so you can choose the one you prefer.
