Rugs you've been eyeing — pick up where you left off.
Large area rugs are the room-size rugs that anchor a living room, sit under a bed or hold a dining table and its chairs. This collection brings together more than 1,400 big area rugs in the sizes most homes actually use: around 7x9 and 7x10, the popular 8x10 and 8x11, and 9x12, with many designs also offered in bigger cuts. You will find more than 850 wool and wool-blend rugs alongside easy-care polyester, polypropylene and nylon-blend options, in contemporary, traditional, oriental, distressed and bohemian looks. If you are furnishing a main living space and need a rug big enough to pull the furniture together, start here.
What Counts as a Large Area Rug?
Rug sizes fall into three broad groups. Small and medium rugs, up to about 6x9, work as accents, under a coffee table or beside a bed. Large rugs start at roughly 7x9 and run up to 9x12. These are the sizes that let the front legs of a sofa and chairs, or the whole lower two-thirds of a bed, rest on the rug. Anything from about 10x13 upward is an oversized rug, made for open-plan rooms and great rooms.
A big rug changes how a room reads. A small rug floating in the middle of a living room makes the space look bitty, while a large rug ties the seating group into one zone and makes the room feel finished. That is why designers usually tell people to size up: if you are torn between two sizes, the bigger one is almost always the right call.

Wool Large Rugs
Wool is the most common material in this collection, with more than 600 pure wool rugs and close to 250 wool blends. Wool is naturally springy, so it recovers well under sofa and table legs, and it hides everyday soil better than most synthetics. Many of the wool rugs here are hand tufted, hand woven or hand loomed, and nearly 60 are hand knotted. Browse more in wool rugs.
Polyester, Polypropylene and Nylon Large Rugs
For a big rug that is easy to live with, look at the synthetic options: about 280 polyester rugs, more than 200 polypropylene and polypropylene-blend rugs, and over 100 nylon blends. Most of these are machine made, which keeps patterns crisp and consistent across a large surface. More than 140 rugs in this collection are rated for indoor/outdoor use, so they can also cover a covered patio or porch; see outdoor rugs for the full range.
Natural Fiber Large Rugs
About 40 jute and jute-blend rugs, plus a few linen and cotton-blend pieces, give a relaxed, textured base that suits farmhouse and coastal rooms. Natural fibers look best in drier, lower-traffic spaces such as a bedroom or a formal living room.
Large Rugs by Style
Contemporary designs make up the biggest share, with more than 640 rugs in geometric, striped, abstract and solid patterns. Traditional and oriental large rugs, many with medallion and floral patterns, number more than 350 between them. You will also find distressed, bohemian, southwestern, transitional, modern and Scandi styles. A large traditional area rug with a central medallion suits a formal living room, while a distressed or abstract design works well in a casual family room where wear is expected.
Large Rugs by Color
Blue is the most common color, with more than 300 rugs, followed by ivory, grey, beige, green and red. Neutral ivory, beige and grey large rugs keep a big floor calm and let furniture stand out. Blue, navy, red and green rugs bring color into a room without adding more furniture or art.
Large Rug Sizes: Which One Fits Your Room?
For any large rug, aim to leave about 12 to 18 inches of bare floor between the rug and the walls. Under a dining table, the rug should extend about 24 inches past the table edge on every side so chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. Size tags are approximate, so check the exact dimensions on each listing.

Large Living Room Rugs, Bedroom Rugs and Dining Rugs
Large Rugs for the Living Room
The living room is where large rugs earn their keep. A large living room rug should be wide enough that at least the front legs of every seat in the conversation group sit on it. In most rooms that means an 8x10 for a sofa and two chairs, or a 9x12 for a sectional or a larger seating group. Find more ideas in living room rugs.
Large Bedroom Rugs
Under a bed, a big rug gives you something soft to step onto on both sides. Position it so it starts a little below the nightstands and extends 18 to 24 inches past the foot of the bed.
Large Dining Room Rugs
Dining rugs take chair traffic every day, so a flat or low-profile rug in a durable fiber works best. Polypropylene and polyester rugs are easy to wipe after spills, and wool hides crumbs and wear well. See more in dining room rugs.
Caring for a Big Area Rug
A large rug is an investment in floor space, and a few habits keep it looking good for years:
Vacuum regularly. Once or twice a week in busy rooms. Use a suction-only setting or a raised beater bar on wool and hand-made rugs.
Rotate it. Turn the rug 180 degrees every six months or so to even out sun fading and foot traffic.
Blot spills fast. Blot, do not rub, with a clean cloth and cool water. Wool resists stains naturally; polypropylene and polyester do not absorb most water-based spills.
Use a rug pad. A pad stops a big rug from creeping and protects the floor underneath. See rug pads.
If you have pets or children, more than 360 rugs here are tagged pet friendly, and about 30 are washable. Browse pet-friendly rugs and washable rugs for the full ranges.
Frequently Asked Questions
What size is considered a large area rug?
A large area rug is usually anything from about 7x9 up to 9x12. These are room-size rugs that hold a full seating group or a bed. Rugs smaller than about 7x9, such as 5x8 and 6x9, are medium rugs, and rugs from around 10x13 upward are considered oversized rugs, made for great rooms and open floor plans.
What size big rug do I need for my living room?
Most living rooms need an 8x10 rug, which fits a sofa and two chairs with their front legs on the rug. Choose a 9x12 for a sectional or a bigger room, and a 7x9 or 7x10 for a smaller room. Leave about 12 to 18 inches of floor showing between the rug edges and the walls.
Is it better to have a bigger rug or a smaller rug?
In most rooms, bigger is better. A rug that is too small floats in the middle of the floor and makes the furniture look disconnected. A large rug that reaches under the front legs of the seating ties the room together and makes it feel more spacious. If you are between two sizes, choose the larger one.
What is the difference between large and oversized rugs?
Large rugs run from about 7x9 to 9x12 and fit most living rooms, bedrooms and dining rooms. Oversized rugs start around 10x13 and go up to about 12x15, and they are made for great rooms, open-plan spaces and very large bedrooms. If your room is wider than about 13 feet on its short side, look at oversized rugs.
How do you clean a large area rug?
Vacuum a large area rug once or twice a week, blot spills straight away with a clean damp cloth, and rotate it every six months. For deep cleaning, most wool and hand-made rugs should go to a professional rug cleaner. Washable rugs can be cleaned at home, following the instructions on the listing.
What material is best for a big rug in a busy room?
Wool is a strong choice for busy rooms because it is resilient and hides soil well. For homes with pets, kids or frequent spills, polypropylene and polyester large rugs are easy to clean and hold their color. Nylon blends are also hard-wearing. Natural jute is best kept to quieter rooms.
