Rugs you've been eyeing — pick up where you left off.

Oversized rugs are the biggest area rugs we carry, made for great rooms, open floor plans and large primary bedrooms where a standard 8x10 or 9x12 would leave too much bare floor. This collection holds more than 400 oversized area rugs, mostly in sizes around 10x13 and 10x14, with a smaller group of 12x15 rugs for the largest rooms. Most are machine made in durable polyester, polypropylene and nylon blends, and more than 130 are wool or wool blends. Traditional and medallion designs lead the range, followed by contemporary, modern, bohemian and distressed looks.

What Makes a Rug Oversized?

There is no official cutoff, but in practice a rug is oversized once it goes past 9x12, the largest of the standard room sizes. From there the common sizes step up to about 10x13, 10x14 and 12x15. At these sizes a single rug can cover most of the floor in a big living room, sit under all of the furniture in a seating area, or define a zone within an open-plan space.

Oversized rugs solve a problem that smaller rugs cannot. In a large room, an 8x10 rug often looks like an island, with the sofa and chairs sitting around it instead of on it. An oversized rug puts every piece of furniture on the same surface, which makes a big room feel planned and comfortable rather than empty.

If your room is a more typical size, our large rugs collection covers 7x9 through 9x12, and our medium rugs cover around 5x7 to 6x9 for smaller rooms and accents.

Easy-Care Synthetic Oversized Rugs

Synthetic fibers make up the largest part of this collection: about 100 polyester rugs, more than 150 polypropylene and polypropylene-blend rugs, and close to 100 nylon blends. Most are machine made, which keeps a detailed medallion or border pattern sharp across a very large surface. These fibers are a practical choice for a rug this big, because they handle heavy foot traffic and resist most water-based stains. More than 200 rugs here are tagged pet friendly. Wool Oversized Rugs

Close to 70 pure wool rugs and about 70 wool blends give you a natural-fiber option for a formal living room or a primary bedroom. Many are hand tufted or hand woven, and there are a small number of hand-knotted pieces. Wool is resilient under heavy furniture and hides everyday soil well. Browse the full range in wool rugs.

Oversized Oriental and Traditional Rugs

Traditional rugs are the single largest style group, with more than 170 designs, and medallion patterns appear on nearly half of the collection. Oversized oriental rugs, with central medallions, wide borders and allover floral fields, suit large formal rooms and classic interiors. Explore more in traditional rugs and oriental rugs.

Contemporary, Modern and Boho Oversized Rugs

Contemporary and modern designs together account for more than 220 rugs, with abstract, geometric, striped and solid patterns. Bohemian and distressed rugs add worn, faded looks that are forgiving in a busy family room. For an open floor plan, a quieter abstract or solid rug lets the furniture define the space.

Oversized Rugs by Color

Blue is the most common color, with more than 80 rugs, followed by beige, ivory and red. Grey, brown, black and green designs round out the range. A neutral beige or ivory oversized rug keeps a large room calm, while blue and red work well with traditional furniture and wood floors.

Oversized Rug Sizes and Where They Fit

Measure the room first. For any oversized rug, leave roughly 12 to 18 inches of floor between the rug and each wall; in very large rooms you can leave more and use the rug to define a zone. Size tags are approximate, so check the exact dimensions on each listing.

Room or useRecommended oversized rug size
Living room about 12 to 14 feet wide, full seating group on the rug10x13 or 10x14
Large primary bedroom with a king bed and nightstands on the rug10x13 or 10x14
Dining room with a table for eight to ten10x13 or 10x14
Great room or open-plan living area12x15
Square room or a round dining table9x9

The 10x13 is the most common size here, with more than 270 designs, followed by more than 100 designs in 10x14. Shop that exact size in 10x14 rugs. If you are not sure you need to go this big, compare with 9x12 rugs, the largest standard size.

Oversized Rugs for Open Floor Plans

In an open-plan home, an oversized rug does the job walls would do in a traditional layout: it marks where the living area starts and stops. Center the rug on the seating group rather than on the room, and make it big enough that every seat sits fully or partly on it. If the space includes a dining area, use a second rug there and keep the two in related colors so the rooms read as one.

Because oversized rugs are heavy and cover a lot of floor, always put a non-slip pad underneath. A pad keeps a big rug from creeping and bunching where people walk across it, and it protects hardwood from the rug's backing. See rug pads.

Caring for an Oversized Rug

  • Vacuum often. Work in overlapping passes across the whole rug once or twice a week, including under furniture where dust collects.
  • Rotate when you can. Turning a big rug 180 degrees once a year evens out sun fading and traffic paths. It is a two-person job, so plan it for when you move furniture.
  • Treat spills right away. Blot with a clean, damp cloth from the outside in. Polyester and polypropylene resist most water-based spills; wool resists stains naturally but should be blotted, not rubbed.
  • Get professional cleaning for deep cleans. Oversized rugs are too large to wash at home, so send wool and hand-made rugs to a rug cleaner every year or two.

Frequently Asked Questions

What size rug is considered oversized?

A rug is generally considered oversized when it is bigger than 9x12, the largest standard room size. Common oversized rug sizes are around 10x13, 10x14 and 12x15. These sizes are meant for great rooms, open floor plans and large bedrooms where a standard 8x10 or 9x12 rug would look too small.

When should I choose an oversized rug instead of a 9x12?

Choose an oversized rug when your room is wider than about 12 to 13 feet and you want all the furniture in the seating area on the rug. If a 9x12 would leave more than about two feet of floor showing on each side, a 10x13 or 10x14 rug will look more in proportion with the room.

Are oversized area rugs good for open floor plans?

Yes. An oversized area rug is one of the easiest ways to define a living area in an open floor plan. Center it under the seating group so every sofa and chair sits on it. It visually separates the living zone from the kitchen or dining area without adding walls or dividers.

What is the best material for an oversized rug?

For a busy family room, polypropylene, polyester and nylon-blend oversized rugs are durable and easy to clean, and many are pet friendly. For a formal living room or bedroom, wool is resilient, hides soil well and feels softer underfoot. Choose based on how much traffic and how many spills the room gets.

Do you sell oversized oriental rugs?

Yes. Traditional and oriental designs make up a large part of this collection, and many feature classic medallion, border and floral patterns. They come mainly in sizes around 10x13 and 10x14, with some in 12x15, and in both easy-care synthetic fibers and wool or wool blends.

Can I return an oversized rug?

Yes. Returns are free for 30 days on RugKnots orders, including oversized rugs. That gives you time to see the rug in your room, check the size against your furniture and make sure the color works with your light before you decide to keep it.
