What Are Persian Rugs?

Weavers use supreme quality wool for the making of Persian Rugs. Each piece of Persian Carpet is a testament of history. It’s either the legacy of a Persian tribe or the craft of a skilled weaver still employing Persian designs in their creations.

First created around 2,000 years ago, Persian Carpets are hand-knotted pieces of textile with classical patterns and rich coloring. Homeowners and interior designers around the world seek Antique Persian Rugs for their long-lasting beauty and traditional charm. Persian Silk Rugs are known to enrich the accents of the most eclectic home designs. They add sophisticated charm to the place and add delicate intricacy to the interior décor.

It takes up to months and sometimes even years to complete a single piece of Persian runner rug. Hence, these rugs are a unique work of unparalleled craftsmanship and artistic vision. Persian Style Rugs are not just pretty to look at but are also durable and long-lasting.

The Origin of Persian Rugs

The Persian Empire stretched from regions of Africa to India. It was unyielding in its power and brimming with unbridled art and creativity. In times of the Safavid Rule, the Persian artistes were at the apex of success.

Today, known as Iran and no longer a mighty kingdom, the country has retained its flair for artistic creations, especially in rug making. Weavers in the modern cities of Tabriz, Herat, Isfahan, and Kerman are the most highly-valued manufacturers and sellers of Persian Carpets all over the world.

The Persian arts thrived because the elites of the Safavid Dynasty encouraged art and literature including calligraphy, paintings, and weaving. Truly cherished and treasured to this day, hand-knotted Antique Persian Rugs are one of the biggest legacies of the Persian heritage. The Persian Rug business has been running for close to several centuries and its fine arts, rich culture, and nurtured tradition is still evident in the Persian Rugs of today.

In the 16th century, the aristocratic class from all over the world imported authentic Persian Carpets for their homes and offices. During the mid-19th century, the privileged classes of England and Germany were the top customers of Persian carpets. These countries played a significant role in the development of rug production in Iran.

The ruler of Persia at the time, Reza Shah Pahlavi, built rug factories and royal carpet industries to help local weavers further their creations in rug making. As a result, under his rule, Persia produced high-end rugs of all time, sold at large to countries far and wide.

How Are Persian Rugs Made?

Persian Style Rugs have a different construction based on their type and geographical location where weavers create them. The traditional Persian carpets have a single knot, also known as the Persian knot or the Senneh knot.

The single knot determines the identity of the rug and the region of its creation. Artisans who make Persian runners and rugs are known by their weaving techniques. To confirm the type of knot, the sellers and traders splay open the rug pile by flexing it and studying the knot.

What Materials Are Used in the Making of Persian Rugs?

Cotton is useful in the making of both warp and weft of Persian Carpets. A lot of tribes, however, use wool to weave the foundation of Persian Wool Rugs. Luxurious collections of Persian carpets employ silk for the base as well as the pile of Persian Silk Rugs. So the three main materials used in the making of Persian carpets are cotton, wool, and silk. Let’s have look at them in detail:

1- Wool

Wool is perhaps one of the most commonly used materials in the making of Persian carpets and runners. It is soft, durable and easily available in most of the regions of Iran where the production of Persian Wool Rugs began. For luster and a satiny sheen, weavers use camel or goat hairs, but a lot of experienced weavers discourage the practice. The reason behind this is the difficulty most weavers face in dyeing camel and goat hair rugs. Consequently, the rugs made from these materials also tend to lose their color faster than Persian Wool Rugs.

The best wool in Iran is in places of higher altitude. The mountainous regions of Iran produce some of the best quality wool in the world. Weavers also import some top-grade wool from Australia and New Zealand – two countries known for their commendable production of wool.

Kurk is the best kind of wool used by Persian weavers. It is the best quality wool and extremely soft and pliable. This wool is from the shoulders and the under-belly of a lamb. This wool is some of the finest in Iran and often mixed with silk for the production of luxury rugs.

2- Silk

Pure silk is extremely expensive and only used in luxury items sold for extortionate sums of money. Obtained from the cocoon of silkworms living off of mulberry leaves, silk first originated in China. Due to extensive demand, its productions in different countries began.

Silk is the chosen material for quality textile productions due to its strength and fine quality. The intricate detail and durability of silk rugs make them perfect for use as wall hangings and upholstery for furniture items. As a result, some weavers use a small quantity of silk with wool to highlight the details of the Persian Silk Rug and add luster to it.

You should avoid cleaning rugs made from pure silk at home. Always take it to a professional rug cleaning specialist for cleaning and maintenance purposes.

3- Cotton

Weavers use cotton to weave the foundation of the rug. A lot of Turkish weavers also use cotton for white detailing and creating color and texture contrasts. Weavers also use mercerized cotton for an art-silk effect.

What Are the Best Types of Persian Rugs?

Persian carpets have expanded into many different types based on tribes and cities. Each one of them is exceptional and distinctive. The vast range of Persian carpets on the market is the testament of its demand all over the world. But for now, we have picked three widely sold and highly demanded types of Persian Rugs.

Mohtashem Kashan Rugs: These rugs are popular for their indigo and red silk bindings. Weavers mostly use blue wefts in the making of these rugs. Of all the different types of Persian carpets, these are one of the highly demanded ones, sold for huge amounts of money worldwide.

Kerman Rug: These rugs are unique in their weaving technique. Weavers make them using a special vase technique. These rugs have gained fast popularity amongst homeowners and rug enthusiasts all over the world.

Garden Design Rugs: Floral designs are common in a lot of different kinds of rugs. Persians take them a step further with elaborate patterns of gardens and water channels adorning the carpets. These designs have stunning intricacy and complexity and remain unparalleled in their beauty to this day.

Why Are Antique Persian Rugs Expensive?

Antique Persian Rugs have significantly decreased in quantity with years and will continue to do so. Today, Antique Persian Rugs are rare and all things rare are expensive. Antique Persian carpets are of great value in the rug market of today. With time, the antiques are becoming a dying breed. This reason, combined with the true essence of Persian antiques, is why these rugs are so expensive. As time goes on, rug enthusiasts crave antique fashion and the intricacy of the originals. As a result, they purchase Persian antiques for unfathomable amounts of money.

How to Identify Authentic Handmade Persian Rugs?

Due to expensive pricing, rug marketers are now in the business of selling copies of the authentic Persian carpets. But fear not, we are right here to help you determine the authenticity of every Persian Rug you purchase at RugKnots.

Check the Back of the Rug

The first thing you should do when browsing through our rugs collection of Overdyed Persian Rugs, Round Persian Rugs, and Persian runners, is to check the back. If the rug is an original, it will have horizontal lines of the weft threads. The lines may not be perfectly straight, and there might be a few imperfections, but the thread lines must run horizontally to the fringe of the rug.

Do not doubt imperfections of the rugs; they make the product authentic. If the rug is hand-knotted, you will find a few knotting errors at the back. This is simply because weavers create these rugs by hand and not by machine. A flawless back usually means the rug is machine-made. You might even find that some areas at the back are thicker than the others. This is not indicative of poor craftsmanship but shows that the rug is a human creation.

Check the Front of the Rug

The next step is to check the front. First off, check the intricacy of design closely. If you find no imperfections, there is a 60% chance the rug is machine-made. Hand-knotted Persian carpets will have imperfections and asymmetry.

Afterward, check the uniformity of colors on the rug. A few subtle changes in tones and vibrancy are common for hand-knotted rugs. The background color may show a few changes since hand-dyed rugs are not perfect in tone and shade. Colors also change due to a change in the atmosphere. Wool is sensitive to the exposure to light and changes in the atmosphere, and this might reflect on the dye of the rug. The color variations ensure the authenticity of the rug and do not detract from the value.

Check the Pile

If the Persian runner rug has a wool pile, it is probably hand-knotted. Weavers use wool to weave the pile of the rug. Whereas, machine-made rugs have piles made from polyester or nylon.

Check the Tag

Some rugs come with a cloth tag sewn to the corner of the rug. It usually indicates the place where the rug has been woven. It would say something like “Made in Pakistan” or “Made in Iran”. This is a clear indication that the rug is indeed hand-knotted.

Why Should You Buy Persian Rugs?
