Adding an area rug to the décor of your living room, bedroom, or dining room can offer a lot more than just floor coverage and comfort for your feet. Finding the perfect rug for your space can bring together the entire room while choosing the wrong one can make a room feel disjointed and disorganized. There are a variety of options if you are looking to purchase a rug, between color, material, size, pattern, and country of origin. Whatever you choose, remember that an area rug acts as artwork for your floor – it should either complement and soften the tone of the room or act as a statement piece to accent the other furniture. Buying an area rug can be a great investment for your home, but there are a lot of things you should consider before rushing out to buy one. Here is our comprehensive buying guide for a rug, which walks you through every single feature and factor you need to consider when you are trying to choose the perfect area rug for your home.

Pricing Range For An Area Rug

Of course, like any piece of household furniture, area rugs come in a wide price range depending on the quality, size, and style. For a very cheap option, you could be looking at just $1 per square foot, but you will not be guaranteed a high-quality, durable product. For a better-quality area rug, though not the top tier, designer rugs, you are probably looking at paying about $5-$10 per square foot. Once you reach the highest quality rugs made from more expensive materials or from designers, you are likely to be paying anywhere from $10 per square foot, to upwards of $25 per square foot Wayfair. An area rug also offers an alternative to wall-to-wall carpeting, which can be difficult to clean and expensive and time-consuming if you ever want to change up your look. Read through this article on the rug and carpet flooring prices for a more detailed review of the various rug and carpet prices available to you, as well as advice on other resources for choosing, installing, and caring for a carpet or outdoor rug in your home tufted.

Material And Fibers For An Area Rug

Certain brands will offer different price ranges, depending on the styles and materials you choose. Most carpeting is made of nylon, which is not a particularly expensive fabric, so it will likely make up the majority of the mid-range price options. Wool is the most expensive natural fiber, so will cost you considerably more money plush. However, the more expensive the fiber, the softer and more durable your area rug will be. For this reason, it is important to focus on choosing the right material to suit your everyday lifestyle, rather than whichever material is cheapest.

Don’t forget – an area rug is an investment piece, so think of its value in the long-run when looking at prices.

There are countless other factors to consider when it comes to deciding on the fiber, such as how easy it is to clean and what function it will serve to those in the house. If you love to lounge on your living room floor, you’ll want to invest in something cozy; if you live with someone who uses a cane or a wheelchair, you are going to want something less textured, like a low-pile rug overstock for rug sizes.

Sizing & Layout/Placing For An Area Rug

Once you have picked out the perfect area rugs for your home, it is incredibly important that you have the correct size and placement to ensure it really brings the room together. There are plenty of guides online to help you get the right size area rug, but it actually comes down to a very simple rule-of-thumb: the rug should accommodate the main furniture in the room. In a living room, for example, your area rug should either sit fully under the furniture in the seating area, or at least under the coffee table and front legs of the couch and/or chairs. In a dining room, this means that the rug should sit as a frame for the dining table, extending at least to the reach of the chairs when pulled out, if not a few feet further. When it comes to placement in the bedroom, your area rug should be turned so that it covers the space on either side of the bed. It should always sit underneath the feet at the end of the bed (with a few feet extra at the end) and be large enough to reach at least two-thirds of the way towards the top of the bed for home decor. If you end up with a rug that is far too small for your space – or, for that matter, far too large – the room can end up looking disorganized and badly designed. A properly sized rug for your room should accommodate for the existing furniture, frame the room, and accentuate or complement the décor.

Shop Oriental Rugs

Oriental Rugs

Oriental rugs are one of the finer options when it comes to area rugs. By nature, these rugs are one-of-a-kind, hand-woven or hand-knotted, and each one is unique. They are made with traditional Middle Eastern techniques on a loom and use only natural dyes. The higher the knot density, the higher the quality and the longer the rug will last: Average knot density for a decent quality rug is over 100 knots per square inch but can reach as high as 400 knots per square inch. A high knot density means the rugs are structurally much stronger and more durable, while also allowing for more intricate designs with a variety of thread colors for size rug.

Pay Attention to the Details:

if the knots are very uniform, it is likely that the rug has been machine-made. Make sure the fiber is actually what your dealer is selling it as – boiled cotton is often passed as silk and wool can be faked, too. There are ways to make sure of the material of the rug pad you are looking to buy, such as the common burning technique.

Another feature of Oriental rugs:

that people are often concerned about is the fringe. Many handmade knotted rugs do have fringe on the ends, while machine-made rugs are often bound on all sides. Having said that, not all genuine handmade Oriental rugs have fringe: some choose to have the ends bound after they buy the rug, or simply seal the fringe on the underside of the rug so that it is not visible. Also, bear in mind that it is very rare for the fringe on an authentic Oriental hand-knotted rug shag to ever be dyed. If it is, this may be a sign that it is, in fact, machine-made, but it does not guarantee it.  It can take several months, even up to a year, to make a single Oriental rug by hand. Due to this labor-intensive process, knotted Oriental rugs are likely to be priced considerably higher than other area rug options. However, thanks to their uniqueness, durability, and strength, a handmade Oriental rug is a worthwhile investment and a beautiful addition to your home.
